Design meaningful API tests
Cover real behavior and failure cases instead of mirroring implementation.

Keep secrets and customer data out of prompts. Use repository-approved tools, review generated changes and run meaningful checks before merging.
Before you start
API contract; authentication rules; boundary conditions; test framework.

Use the product for the supported part of this workflow. Example prompts are adaptable writing instructions, not a promise that every tool accepts text prompts or implements every step.
Follow the workflow
- STEP 1
List observable outcomes and prioritize risky scenarios.
- STEP 2
Draft tests for success, invalid input, authorization and downstream failures.
- STEP 3
Run against the implementation; confirm at least one test catches the original bug.
Example prompt / brief
Replace bracketed text with non-sensitive, authorized information.
Using this API contract, propose JUnit tests for authorization, validation and failure handling. Explain what each proves. Avoid mocking the method under test or asserting internal implementation details. [contract]
What you should have
A risk-based test matrix and executable tests.
Review before using
Check assertions and test isolation. Passing generated tests does not establish full correctness.
